I called Evan's Funeral Home to ask what access they allow genealogists, and it turns out you have to be either the child or parent of--so I won't be able to go through the records of my brother and uncles/aunts. I was able to find out what county in TN my brother died, so now I'm able to send away for his death certificate. But again, you have to be a child/parent in order for the certificate to list cause of death. I already know Snooky died from drowning, so there isn't a mystery there. But...I think I'll ask to have the cause listed anyway. I put my phone number on the form so they can contact me about it.
Update 4/7/2011:
I have heard back from TN, and was told that, not only would I not receive the death certificate with the cause of death, but I won't even get a death certificate at all. I have to submit a different form, and I'll receive a death verification letter, which will not be certified.

I understand the emphasis on privacy these days, but sometimes a child or parent is not the closest living relative.
ReplyDeleteI agree completely. He was so young when he died--single & childless. And my mother and step-father are dead. I find it ridiculous.
